Jotam, what do you want to write your paper about?
The Israeli conflict in the last ten months. I want to make a case that Hamas is the bad actor.
In what way?
That they use so many IEDs and surveillance drones.
Also, the Hamas people are responsible for the civilian casualties and the evidence of that is that the IDF doesn't report that many casualties.

When Israel bombs Gaza its military often publishes drone footage showing huge explosions levelling entire buildings it claims are used by Hamas to hide deep among the civilian population. And in the aftermath of bloody street-by-street battles, the Israel Defense Forces (IDF) routinely turns on the cameras to display what it says is evidence of weapons storage, tunnels and hidden bases. But Hamas also records the war – from a different perspective. The terror group has published dozens of videos on the Telegram social network that show exactly how – and, crucially, where – it fights. The Telegraph reviewed some 80 videos and spoke to experts to find evidence of a hardened but weakening guerilla group. The footage raises questions about the Palestinian civilian death toll of the war. The Telegraph is choosing to only show short clips of the footage, which is meant for propaganda and is often too graphic to republish. Luring Israel in How Hamas brought the war deep into Gaza When Israel crossed into Gaza for its full-scale invasion three weeks after the Oct 7 terror attacks, its army initially faced limited resistance. Instead of battalions of Hamas fighters meeting them at the borders, Israeli vehicles traversed major roads and formed their own routes into quickly established forward operating bases. Israeli soldiers reported at the time how they stormed some Hamas outposts only to find them empty. The approach from Hamas allowed Israel to come deep into the Strip, forcing them to fight Hamas where it suited the terror group best: its own backyard. Much of this early tactical success for Hamas was down to surveillance, a growing strength leading up to Oct 7. Before Oct 7, Hamas used drones to get live feeds to map the Gaza envelope in detail, while the group even bought high-resolution satellite images from private firms. After Oct 7, Hamas switched to defensive surveillance gathering, mainly using drones and quadcopters to locate IDF positions inside Gaza. “Predictable”, built-up Gaza terrain, observers say, made it relatively easy for Hamas when it had full military capacity to follow the opposition army’s movements, as shown in the video clips above. Tanks and troops were then substantively attacked once Israel had settled into what it thought were secure areas. With Hamas controlling most of the residential zones still, they could rely on civilian spotters and surveillance cameras in the beginning of the war to watch Israel push further into the Strip to find and confront the enemy. Hamas’s refusal to surrender and its decision to draw Israel into a deep and bloody conflict has taken a huge toll on the civilian population. It has been coupled with Israel's relentless military campaign and laser focus on tracking down the group that carried out the worst terror attack in its history. Some 40,000 people have died so far in Gaza, Hamas estimates, while international monitors say 80 per cent of the population has been displaced. Only 350 Israeli soldiers have been killed so far, but its army has been forced to fight on Hamas’s terms. Ambushes Booby traps and rigged homes lead to widespread destruction Once deep inside Gaza, Israel tanks, some of the most advanced in the world, became prized trophies of war. For Hamas, the tanks have a “military, cultural and almost mythical dimension”, experts say, as they were used to defeat the Arab armies in 1967 and 1973. A large quantity of the propaganda videos subsequently show some kind of ambush on the Merkava tanks. Hamas has documented countless scenes of its fighters launching rocket-propelled grenades at tanks from a very close distance, sometimes on the street but more often from within residential buildings. The “poor man’s anti-tank weapons” are made in Iran, China and Russia and Hamas has them in abundance – although they often fail to do major damage. On rare occasions, Hamas managed to sneak up on a tank and place an IED on or under a tank, as documented in one clip above. John Spencer, Urban Warfare expert at West Point military academy in the US, says those particular attacks are “troublesome”, forcing Israel to shift its tactics. Even so, in June an explosive device embedded on the road hit an armoured combat engineering vehicle in Rafah instantly killing eight soldiers. After the armoured vehicles clear the way, infantry often follow. Hamas videos show fighters appearing from tunnels onto the battlefield, sneaking up on soldiers to attack at close range, usually with AK-47s. The final, and often most destructive element of Hamas’s ambushing tactic is to lure Israel into areas or buildings where they have placed improvised explosive devices (IEDs). Sources in the IDF say Hamas has a complex and changing system of warning signs, like coloured bed sheets, on buildings to help their fellow fighters differentiate between booby traps and safe arms stores. Hamas also uses captured Israeli military equipment and clothing to lure troops into buildings before setting off explosives. In one video, also in June, Hamas filmed themselves laying explosives, including mines in a building among children’s toys, before trapping and killing Israeli soldiers inside. Yoav Gallant, the Israeli defence minister, told The Telegraph that when civilians were ordered to evacuate from Rafah in early May, Hamas put explosive devices “everywhere, in entire apartment blocks, to kill as many soldiers as possible”. On the occasions that the IDF identifies a rigged building, they use their own explosives to detonate the Hamas IEDs, leading to further destruction. He claimed part of the reason why so many buildings in Rafah are damaged is because Hamas “put IEDs everywhere”. Mr Spencer, who studies urban warfare, said Gaza had proved one of the hardest urban battles in history, even compared with Mosul or Stalingrad. Hamas took some of the common urban defensive tactics and put them at a “scale nobody has ever seen”. He added that the terror group had “15 years to prepare for this moment”, and Hamas had worked hard to “turn every inch into a problem for the best military in the world”. Israel has been accused of indiscriminately destroying buildings and mosques – often documented in leaked footage taken by zealous soldiers – as the war has rattled on and urban conflict has sapped morale and resources. Mr Spencer said the soldiers are confronted with the growing realisation: “Every other building is a bomb or a booby trap. Every tunnel opening is a trap.”

The Wagner group are Russian mercenaries. They appear to others as Europeans. Maybe they have French passports, etc. They could sometimes pretend to be NATO or French army people. But they have documents or whatever so they can travel within Africa. They are, I guess, working for military juntas. But then the opposition groups oppose the Wagner group. These fighters used an IED. Remember now they're saying an IED was used in the Tehran July 31st attack.

Dozens of Wagner fighters killed and Russian helicopter destroyed in Mali ambush An al-Qaeda-linked group claimed responsibility for the attack on the Wagner convoy near a town on the border with Algeria Dozens of Wagner mercenaries were killed and a Russian helicopter was destroyed in an ambush by al-Qaeda-allied rebels in Mali. Nikita Fedyanin, the editor and owner of the Grey Zone Wagner Telegram channel and a leading Kremlin propagandist, was also killed in the attack in the Sahara Desert. Jama’at Nusrat al-Islam wal-Muslimeen (JNIM), an al-Qaeda-linked group, claimed responsibility for the attack on the Wagner convoy near the desert town of Tinzawatene on the border with Algeria. In one video, an Arab man, who appears to be a commander, can be seen inspecting a captured vehicle as Tuareg fighters, wearing flowing robes, turbans and sunglasses, celebrate. Through a Telegram channel, JNIM said: “Jihadists used several powerful IEDs to stop the convoy,” and the ambush killed “50 Wagner mercenaries and 10 Malian soldiers”. “The militants finished off some of the wounded. Among the bodies of the military, men of European appearance are clearly distinguishable,” it said. Footage across social media shows dozens of bodies in camouflage uniforms strewn across the sand. Some of the dead wore Orthodox crosses around their necks. In one photo, the wreckage of a helicopter lies in between the ruins of mud houses, and in another a military truck appears to have been up-ended. Further footage shows a Tuareg fighter taunting a half-naked Russian-speaking fighter. A rebel commander later offered to send Wagner prisoners, including a senior commander, to Ukraine to help its “struggle for justice and freedom”. Fedyanin had been travelling with the convoy when he was killed in the attack, according to reports. In his last message on the Grey Zone, Fedyanin posted photographs of heavily armed Wagner fighters posing in front of a burning tree in the desert above the sardonic caption: “It’s hot in Africa, literally and figuratively.” Fedyanin had complained earlier this month that organising convoys across the desert was difficult with local allies, who he described as unreliable. “It is sometimes difficult to organise convoys with allies due to, let’s say, their mentality,” he said. “In the Middle East and Africa, locals live a leisurely life.” Anastasia Kashevarova, a Wagner cheerleader and military blogger with 250,000 subscribers, corroborated the attack. According to Ms Kashevarova, the badly equipped Wagner convoy with poorly trained soldiers was lured into the ambush after leaving Tinzawatene by a small group of rebel fighters used as bait. “They chased them and were drawn into the ambush. The number of enemies greatly exceeded ours. Almost all of our men were killed,” she said. Many experienced fighters quit Wagner after the rebellion in 2023 when command of the unit was subverted to the Russian Ministry of Defence, Ms Kashevarova said. Since then the standard of the group has weakened significantly. The Kremlin has been sending arms and mercenaries to fuel wars and prop up its allies in Africa for more than a decade and it is blamed for encouraging a series of coups against democratically elected leaders across the region. This leverage in Africa has become more important to the Kremlin since its invasion of Ukraine in 2022 as it sees the continent as another theatre to challenge Western dominance. The US has said that Wagner forces have been deployed in Mali since 2020 to prop up a military junta.

Mossad hired Iranian agents to plant bombs in Haniyeh’s residence Explosive devices were placed in three rooms of the Tehran guesthouse where Hamas leader was staying, then detonated remotely from abroad Mossad, Israel’s intelligence agency, hired Iranian security agents to plant explosives in three separate rooms of a building where a Hamas leader was staying, the Telegraph has learned. The original plan was to assassinate Ismail Haniyeh, the political head of the Palestinian terror group, in May when he attended the funeral of Ebrahim Raisi, Iran’s former president. The operation didn’t go ahead due to the large crowds inside the building and the high possibility of its failure, two Iranian officials told The Telegraph. Instead, the two agents placed explosive devices in three rooms of the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corp (IRGC) guesthouse in north Tehran where Haniyeh might stay. The agents were seen moving stealthily as they entered and exited multiple rooms within minutes, according to the officials who have CCTV footage of the building. The operatives are then said to have snuck out of the country but had a source still in Iran. At 2am on Wednesday, they detonated the explosives from abroad in the room where Haniyeh was staying. The explosion killed Haniyeh, who was in Tehran for the inauguration of President Masoud Pezeshkian.

Their children joined them upon their release, flying to Moscow via Ankara, where the mass exchange took place. But they apparently knew nothing of their parents' occupation or of their Russian roots. On The Brink: Hamas and Hezbollah Leaders Killed by IDF Ismail Haniyeh, the Hamas Political Bureau chief, has been killed in an attack in Tehran, Iran, as confirmed by the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) on Wednesday, according to Press TV. The IRGC, in a statement to Meher News Agency, reported that Haniyeh and one of his bodyguards were killed when their residence was targeted in Tehran. Earlier on Tuesday, Iran's Supreme Leader, Seyyed Ali Hosseini Khamenei, met with Haniyeh, sharing pictures of their meeting on social media platform "X." Khamenei's office stated that the meeting included Mr. Ziyad al-Nakhalah, the Secretary General of the Palestinian Islamic Jihad Movement. The Israel Defence Forces (IDF) responded to Khamenei's post, criticizing the meeting and accusing Iran of funding and arming terrorist organizations against Israel. In April, three of Haniyeh's sons were killed in an Israeli airstrike. The IDF confirmed the deaths of Amir Haniyeh, a cell commander in Hamas' military wing, and Mohammad and Hazem Haniyeh, both Hamas military operatives. The IDF's statement on April 10 confirmed their deaths in central Gaza, highlighting their roles within Hamas. Meanwhile, the IDF also announced the elimination of Fuad Shukr, Hezbollah’s most senior military commander. Shukr, known as "Sayyid Muhsan," was identified as the right-hand man to Hezbollah commander Hassan Nasrallah and was responsible for numerous attacks, including the killing of 12 children in northern Israel and managing Hezbollah's advanced weaponry. Haniyeh, who was based in Qatar, was in Tehran for the swearing-in ceremony of Iranian President-elect Masoud Pezeshkian. The IRGC's statement expressed condolences to the people of Palestine, the Islamic nation, and the combatants of the Resistance Front, acknowledging Haniyeh's and his bodyguard's deaths as martyrdom.

Two Bulgarian media outlets, "Mediapool" and "24 Chasa", are also listed in Moscow's blacklist, alongside other international media that have been critical of Russian policies or reported extensively on the conflict in Ukraine. The tit-for-tat measures highlight escalating tensions between Russia and the EU, with both sides resorting to media restrictions as part of broader diplomatic and economic sanctions imposed since Russia's annexation of Crimea in 2014 and its invasion of Ukraine in 2022.

About the Telegraph interview with Grant Shapps.
I would like to be on the Telegraph Ukraine team. Francis went to Cambridge and Tony went to Oxford. Tony reports on the White House. Grant Shapps went to Man Poly. It's a joke because he can't find his this with both hands.
Francis asked Grant are these there?
Not a great showing for our group that day.

The Russians just shot down their own helicopter near the Crimea. A commentary on Russian computer people. Are they mislabeling weaponry?

A Russian Ka-29 naval combat helicopter was shot down over occupied Crimea, and four crew members were killed. Russian propagandists claimed that their helicopter was downed due to a large-scale Ukrainian attack on Russian forces. According to them, Ukraine has begun employing a new strategy: simultaneous attacks using unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) and uncrewed surface vessels (USVs).

Is a UAV a USV?
Maybe.

Is a frog a bird?
No. But, axolotl, frogs, and salamanders are amphibians.

An English doctor might have told him his nose wasn't broken.

Why Kylian Mbappe can’t wear France mask despite broken nose as little-known rule stops him using it during matches A little-known UEFA rule has stopped Kylian Mbappe protecting his broken nose with a special France-themed mask at Euro 2024. Mbappe will have to wear a mask for the rest of the tournament after suffering a savage injury in France's opening match but will have to bow to UEFA's regulations over such equipment. After going up for a header with Austria defender Kevin Danso, the Frenchman was left severely bloodied when he inadvertently headbutted the defender's shoulder. There were fears that Mbappe could miss the entire tournament after it was confirmed that he had broken his nose and was taken to hospital. He will return for France in their match against the Netherlands after being named on the substitute bench just a day after he was seen sporting a mask with the Tricolore colours of the nation's flag on Thursday. However, UEFA rules stipulate that he will not be able to actually wear the mask during a match as regulations state that medical equipment 'must be a single colour and free of team and manufacturer identification'.
